Yangon & Environs
All Myanmar people have pronounced this city Yan Gon, but it was written as Rangoon, R-a-n-g-o-o-n, by British in their accent. Yangon means “End of the Strife” or “the End of conflict”. Before the mid-century, it was a small fishing village of Mon people. The city was founded by King Alaungphaya and established as a big city in 1755. The city has changed along the history, first Dagon, Second Ragoon and then finally back to “Yangon”.
Later in 19th century, British chose this city as a capital and developed as a world-class trade city for its strategic location. Yangon has earned of “ The Garden City of the East”. And it used to have the best sea-port, the finest airport and the best university in Asia in the part. The largest concentration of Victorian-age architectures in Southeast Asia is in down town area.
Yangon, the commercial city is the main gate way to Myanmar. Ever green and cool with lush tropical trees, shady parks and beautiful lakes. Yangon is the biggest city in the nation with about 6 million people. It is about 10% of national population. The area is 350 sq.km.
How to get there
Yangon International Airport and Mandalay International Airport are the main gateways and there are regular daily flights to Yangon from Bangkok and Singapore. The domestic airlines, Myanmar Airways, Yangon Airways’, Aisan Wings, Air KBZ, Mannyadanarpon Air, Air Bagan and Air Mandalay regularly connect Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Bagan, Heho, Kyaing Tong, Tachileik, Thandwe, Kawthaung and to other tourist destinations. Charter flights and Cruise ships are granted Visa on Arrival on prior arrangement.

How to Go about
A limousine service is available at Yangon International Airport. Major hotels provide free airport transfer. Taxis are easily available in town and there are several transport service companies which hire sedans and mini-buses.
